INTERVIEW GUIDE

BCG Management Consultant Interview: Questions & Process

BCG's consultant interview is built around the case interview: structured problem-solving on business situations, plus personal-fit conversations about your experiences. Many candidates first complete an online case assessment (Casey, BCG's chatbot-based case) before live first-round and final-round interviews. They're testing structured thinking, comfort with quant, business intuition, and clear communication under pressure.

The interview process

1. Application + online case assessment Casey chatbot case / online test (varies by office)
Tests: structured problem-solving, interpreting data, and basic case math
2. First-round interviews 1-2 interviews, ~45 min each
Tests: a business case plus personal-experience (fit) questions
3. Case interview live, interviewer-led case
Tests: framework, structure, quantitative analysis, and a clear recommendation
4. Final-round interviews 2-3 interviews with senior consultants/partners
Tests: harder cases, sharper fit questions, and executive presence
5. Fit / experience interview ~30-45 min
Tests: leadership, teamwork, motivation, and why BCG/consulting

How to answer (worked examples)

A retailer's profits have declined for two years — how would you diagnose the cause?
Don't jump to an answer. Take a moment to build a structure and say it out loud: profit equals revenue minus cost, so break revenue into price and volume (by segment or product) and cost into fixed and variable, then drill into the branch the data points to. Ask for relevant numbers, do the math cleanly, state a hypothesis, and drive toward a recommendation. BCG scores structure, prioritization, and quant accuracy — narrate your logic throughout.
How many electric vehicles are sold in the U.S. each year? Estimate it.
Build a transparent top-down estimate: start from U.S. population or households, get to total annual car sales, then apply an EV penetration percentage. State your assumptions explicitly so the interviewer can follow and adjust, do round-number arithmetic out loud, and sanity-check the final figure. Market sizing tests structured estimation and comfort with numbers, not a memorized fact.
Why consulting, and why BCG?
Be specific and authentic. Tie consulting to what genuinely draws you — variety of problems, steep learning, working with leaders — and connect BCG to something real you've researched or experienced (a person you spoke with, the firm's approach). Avoid generic answers that could apply to any firm. Fit is a real gate at BCG, not a formality.

What BCG looks for

FAQ

What is the BCG Casey assessment?

Casey is BCG's online, chatbot-based case interview used in many offices early in the process. It walks you through a case interactively, testing structure, data interpretation, and case math before you reach live interviews.

How many case interviews will I have?

Typically a couple in the first round and two to three in the final round, each usually paired with or including fit questions. Exact counts vary by office and year.

Are BCG cases interviewer-led or candidate-led?

BCG cases tend to be more interviewer-led, meaning the interviewer guides you through structured parts. You still need your own framework, strong math, and clear communication throughout.

How important is the fit/experience interview?

Very. Even with strong cases, BCG screens hard for motivation, leadership, and teamwork. Prepare several detailed STAR stories and a genuine answer to 'why BCG.'

How do I prepare for the case interview?

Practice cases out loud with a partner — structuring problems, doing clean mental math, and delivering a crisp recommendation. Reading frameworks isn't enough; the skill is performing under live questioning.
