JPMorgan Financial Analyst Interview: Questions & Process

JPMorgan's financial analyst interview pairs finance technicals — the three statements, accounting, and basic valuation (DCF, comps) — with strong behavioral/fit screening and, for markets roles, current-events awareness. It usually starts with a recorded HireVue video interview and ends in a 'Superday' of back-to-back rounds. Polish, attention to detail, and a genuine 'why JPMorgan' matter as much as the technicals.

The interview process

1. Application + HireVue video interview asynchronous, timed recorded prompts
Tests: motivation, communication, and behavioral answers — sometimes a light technical or markets question
2. Recruiter / HR screen ~30 min call
Tests: background, division fit (banking vs markets vs corporate finance), and logistics
3. First-round interview(s) 30-45 min with analysts/associates
Tests: core technicals (accounting, valuation), why finance/why JPMorgan, and resume deep-dive
4. Superday multiple back-to-back 30-45 min interviews
Tests: deeper technicals, behavioral fit, markets/current events, and occasional brainteasers, with senior bankers
5. Final / hiring decision wrap-up with senior staff
Tests: overall polish, culture fit, and confirming interest in the specific group

Questions you're likely to get

Technical

  • Walk me through the three financial statements and how they link together.
  • If depreciation goes up by $10, how do the three statements change (assume a 40% tax rate)?
  • Walk me through a DCF at a high level. What are its biggest sensitivities?
  • What's the difference between enterprise value and equity value?
  • Why might a company with positive net income still go bankrupt?
  • What are the main valuation methodologies, and which gives the highest value and why?
  • What is WACC and how do you calculate it?

Role-specific

  • Tell me about a stock or company you find interesting and why. What's your view?
  • What's happening in the markets right now, and how might it affect our clients?
  • How would interest-rate changes affect a company's valuation?

Behavioral

  • Why JPMorgan, and why this division specifically?
  • Tell me about a time you handled intense pressure or a tight deadline.
  • Describe a time you caught a mistake in detailed work before it mattered.
  • Tell me about a time you worked on a team and had to manage a conflict.
  • What's your greatest weakness, and how are you working on it?

How to answer (worked examples)

If depreciation increases by $10, walk through the three statements.
Assume a 40% tax rate and go in order. Income statement: pre-tax income falls $10, taxes fall $4, net income falls $6. Cash flow: net income -$6, add back $10 non-cash depreciation, cash up $4. Balance sheet: cash +$4, PP&E -$10 (assets net -$6); retained earnings -$6 — it balances. Deliver it crisply and confidently; this is a memorize-cold question where hesitation reads as a gap.
Tell me about a stock you find interesting.
Pick one you actually understand. Give a one-line thesis, 2-3 concrete drivers (growth, margins, catalyst, or a valuation gap), the key risk, and a rough sense of valuation. Keep it tight and show you can form and defend a view — they care about your reasoning and genuine markets interest, not a 'correct' pick.
Why JPMorgan, and why this division?
Be specific: connect JPMorgan's franchise strength, the work in your target group, and what you want to learn early-career. Reference something concrete (a deal type, a desk, a program) and tie it to your background. Avoid generic prestige answers — interviewers screen hard for candidates who clearly understand and want this exact role.

What JPMorgan looks for

FAQ

How technical is the JPMorgan financial analyst interview?

It depends on the division. Banking-style roles expect accounting and valuation (3 statements, DCF, comps, EV vs equity value) cold; markets and corporate-finance roles weight markets awareness and behavioral fit more. Confirm your group and prep accordingly.

What is the HireVue video interview?

A recorded, asynchronous round with timed prompts — mostly behavioral, sometimes a light technical or markets question. Practice answering to a camera concisely; you usually get limited time and few retakes.

What is a Superday?

A final round of several back-to-back interviews in one day, mixing technicals, behavioral fit, and markets discussion with multiple bankers. Stamina, consistency, and polish across every conversation matter.

Do I need a finance major?

Helpful but not required — JPMorgan hires across majors. You must, however, master the core technicals for your division and show genuine interest in markets and the firm.

How long is the process?

Often a few weeks from application to Superday, though campus recruiting timelines and division can shift it earlier or compress it.

Deliver the technicals without flinching
