Deloitte Business Analyst Interview: Questions & Process

Deloitte's Business Analyst interview is more behavioral-and-case than technical: you'll complete online assessments, then face structured behavioral interviews (often competency-based) and a case or scenario exercise. They're testing problem structuring, client-ready communication, and culture fit far more than spreadsheets or code. Expect a mix of 'tell me about a time' questions and a business problem to reason through out loud.

The interview process

1. Application & online assessment Situational judgment, cognitive, and sometimes immersive/job-simulation exercises
Tests: judgment, numerical and verbal reasoning, and alignment with how Deloitte works with clients
2. Recruiter / HR screen ~30 min call
Tests: background, why Deloitte and why consulting, availability and logistics
3. Behavioral interview 45-60 min, competency-based
Tests: teamwork, leadership, handling conflict and ambiguity — answered in STAR with specific examples
4. Case / scenario interview 30-45 min
Tests: structuring a business problem, market sizing or estimation, and communicating a clear recommendation
5. Final / fit round 45 min with a manager or partner
Tests: client presence, motivation, and whether you'd represent Deloitte well in front of clients

How to answer (worked examples)

A retail client's profits are falling despite steady sales. How would you investigate?
Structure before you dive in. Profit = revenue minus costs, so if sales (revenue) are flat, the issue is likely on the cost side or in margin. Lay out a clean framework out loud: break costs into fixed vs variable, check whether COGS, discounts, returns, or rising input/labor costs moved, and confirm with the client what changed and when. State your hypothesis, say what data you'd pull to test it, and end with a clear recommendation. Interviewers score structure and communication, not a memorized answer.
Tell me about a time you had to influence someone who disagreed with you.
STAR. Situation: the disagreement and stakes. Task: what you needed to achieve. Action: how you listened, found common ground, and used evidence rather than authority to persuade. Result: the outcome and the relationship preserved. Deloitte values consultants who can move stakeholders without bulldozing them, so emphasize empathy plus a data-backed argument.

What Deloitte looks for

FAQ

Is the Deloitte Business Analyst interview a full case interview?

It depends on the practice area. Consulting/advisory roles lean on case and scenario questions, while some Business Analyst roles weight behavioral and competency questions more. Either way, prepare to structure a business problem out loud — a light case can show up anywhere.

What are the online assessments like?

Typically situational judgment tests, numerical and verbal reasoning, and sometimes an immersive job-simulation exercise. They gauge your judgment and reasoning, so read scenarios carefully and answer the way a thoughtful consultant would.

How technical is the role?

Less than a data role. You'll need comfort with Excel, basic data interpretation, and clear documentation, but the interview emphasizes problem structuring, requirements gathering, and communication over heavy quantitative tooling.

How should I prepare for the case questions?

Practice common frameworks (profitability, market entry, cost reduction) and market-sizing estimates, but don't force a memorized framework — interviewers want to see you think. Practice talking through structure out loud, not just on paper.

What does Deloitte look for in 'fit'?

Client presence, authentic motivation, teamwork, and values alignment. They're imagining you in front of a client, so be polished, specific, and genuine about why consulting and why Deloitte.
