Deloitte Accountant Interview: Questions & Process

Deloitte's accounting/audit interview is more about fit and fundamentals than trick technicals. After an online job-simulation assessment, you'll face competency-based behavioral interviews ('Why Deloitte', teamwork, leadership) plus core accounting and audit questions — debits and credits, the three financial statements, and basic GAAP. Expect a screen, a virtual job simulation, and one or two interview rounds.

Questions you're likely to get

  • If depreciation increases by $10, how do the income statement, balance sheet, and cash flow statement change?
  • What's the difference between accounts payable and accrued expenses?
  • Explain the difference between accrual and cash basis accounting.
  • What is the purpose of an audit, and what does materiality mean?
  • Give me an example of a debit and a credit for a simple transaction.
  • What are the components of internal controls, and why do auditors care about them?
  • How do you recognize revenue under the current standard (ASC 606) at a high level?

Behavioral

  • Why Deloitte, and why audit (or tax/advisory) specifically?
  • Tell me about a time you worked under a tight deadline with a team.
  • Describe a time you caught an error others missed — what did you do?
  • Tell me about a time you had to manage multiple priorities at once.

How to answer (worked examples)

If depreciation increases by $10, walk through the three statements.
Go in order and assume a tax rate (say 40%). Income statement: pre-tax income falls $10, taxes fall $4, net income falls $6. Cash flow: start from net income -$6, add back the $10 non-cash depreciation, so cash rises $4. Balance sheet: cash up $4, PP&E down $10 (net assets down $6), retained earnings down $6 — and it balances. Narrate each link; the point is showing the statements connect, not speed.
Why Deloitte, and why audit?
Be specific and sincere. Connect Deloitte's scale, training, and reputation to what you want early-career, and explain why audit/assurance fits how you think (rigor, exposure to many businesses, building a strong foundation). Avoid generic praise — name something concrete and tie it to your goals and any relevant coursework or internships.
Tell me about a time you caught an error others missed.
STAR. Situation: the context and what was at stake. Task: your responsibility. Action: how you spotted and verified the error and who you told. Result: the correction and impact. This signals attention to detail and integrity — exactly what audit prizes. Keep it honest and specific.

What Deloitte looks for

FAQ

How technical is the Deloitte accounting interview?

For new grads it's foundational, not brutal — expect the three statements, debits/credits, accrual vs cash, and basic audit concepts like materiality and internal controls. Depth scales with the role and your coursework.

What is the online job simulation?

An immersive assessment that drops you into realistic work scenarios to see how you'd respond, alongside reasoning questions. Treat it like a preview of the job and answer the way a careful, client-focused professional would.

How important is 'Why Deloitte'?

Very. Big Four candidates often look similar on paper, so a specific, authentic motivation — and clarity on audit vs tax vs advisory — helps you stand out.

Do I need to be an accounting major?

It helps, especially for audit/tax, and CPA-eligibility often matters. Still, fundamentals plus fit carry a lot of weight, so prepare the core technicals even if your background is adjacent.

How long is the process?

Often a few weeks from application to offer, though it varies by office and recruiting season (campus timelines move faster).
