PwC Accountant Interview: Questions & Process

PwC's accountant and audit interview weighs professional fit and behavioral competencies as much as technical accounting. Expect an online application and assessment, a recorded video interview, and a final assessment centre that mixes technical accounting (financial statements, debits and credits, audit basics), behavioral questions, and often a group exercise or case. Strong 'why PwC' and 'why audit' answers matter a lot.

The interview process

1. Online application & assessment aptitude / game-based tests
Tests: numerical and logical reasoning plus situational judgement aligned to PwC's values
2. Video interview (HireVue) recorded, timed responses
Tests: motivational and behavioral questions — why PwC, why accounting/audit, teamwork
3. Assessment centre: technical interview 30-45 min
Tests: core accounting — financial statements, debits/credits, audit process, basic GAAP
4. Assessment centre: behavioral / partner interview 30-45 min
Tests: competency questions, commercial awareness, and fit with PwC's values and culture
5. Assessment centre: group exercise / case group activity, ~45 min
Tests: collaboration, communication, and structured thinking on a business scenario

Questions you're likely to get

Technical

  • Walk me through the three financial statements and how they connect.
  • If depreciation increases by $10, what happens across the income statement, balance sheet, and cash flow?
  • Explain the difference between accruals and cash accounting.
  • What's the accounting equation, and why must the balance sheet always balance?
  • What is the purpose of an audit, and what does an unqualified opinion mean?
  • Explain debits and credits — how do they affect assets, liabilities, and equity?
  • What is materiality in an audit, and how does it affect what you test?

Role-specific

  • How would you approach auditing a client's revenue if you suspected errors?
  • What current economic or regulatory trend could affect our clients, and how?
  • How do you ensure accuracy and attention to detail when working under deadline pressure?

Behavioral

  • Why PwC, and why audit/accounting rather than another path?
  • Tell me about a time you worked in a team to hit a tight deadline.
  • Describe a time you spotted an error others had missed.
  • Tell me about a time you had to explain something technical to someone without a finance background.

How to answer (worked examples)

If depreciation increases by $10, walk through all three statements.
Go in order and keep the tax effect explicit (assume a 20% rate as an example). Income statement: pre-tax income falls $10, so net income falls $8 after the tax shield. Cash flow: start from net income down $8, add back the $10 non-cash depreciation, so cash rises $2. Balance sheet: cash up $2, PP&E down $10 (net minus $8 on assets); retained earnings down $8 on the equity side — and it balances. Narrating the linkage cleanly is exactly what they test.
Why PwC, and why audit?
Connect a genuine motivation — the breadth of clients, building a foundation in how businesses really work, earning a professional qualification — to something specific about PwC (its values, a service line, the training pathway). Avoid generic 'Big Four prestige' lines. Show you understand audit is detail-heavy, deadline-driven, and client-facing, and that you want exactly that.
Tell me about a time you spotted an error others missed.
STAR. Situation: the task and where the error hid. Task: your responsibility for accuracy. Action: the careful, methodical check that caught it and how you raised it professionally. Result: the impact of catching it. This maps directly to the attention-to-detail and integrity signals PwC screens for in auditors.

What PwC looks for

FAQ

How technical is the PwC accountant interview?

Expect core accounting rather than obscure standards: the three financial statements and how they link, debits and credits, accruals, the purpose of an audit, and basic materiality. Solid fundamentals explained clearly beat memorized minutiae.

What is the assessment centre?

PwC's final stage — usually a block of activities including a technical/behavioral interview (sometimes with a partner or manager), a group exercise, and occasionally a written case or presentation. It tests both competence and how you work with others.

How important is 'why PwC' and 'why audit'?

Very. PwC screens hard for genuine motivation and fit with its values. A candidate who clearly wants audit and understands the role often beats a technically stronger one with a hollow answer.

What are the online assessments like?

Typically numerical and logical reasoning plus a situational/values-based assessment. Practice timed numerical reasoning and answer the behavioral parts honestly and consistently.

Do I need to know IFRS or US GAAP in detail?

Not in depth for an entry role. Understand the basics and which framework applies in your region, but the focus is fundamentals, reasoning, and fit rather than citing specific standards.
